The Ten Commandments of Curly

 * Properly taking care of curly hair can be a difficult and tedious task! Especially in the fall and winter months coming up. Because the air becomes so dry, it removes a lot of the moisture that those curls want so dearly hold onto. But there's no need to worry! Follow my Ten Commandments of Curly and you'll never have to see another morning like this...

1) Cut down on shampooing. Every time you wash your hair, you are stripping it of its natural oils, which are vital in keeping the hair strong from root to end. (Recommend 2-4times a week, instead of everyday)

2) Use a wide tooth comb, opposed to a brush or small tooth comb.

3) Stay away from any conditioning or styling products that contain alcohol, sulphate, or parabens.

4) Let the hair air dry. Heated tools damage the curls and their natural pattern, leaving it dry and frizzy.

5) Sleep on a satin pillowcase instead of cotton. (better for the skin as well)

6) Deep condition the hair 1-2 times a week. My favorite home remedy is mixing coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil. Leave the treatment on overnight and wash in the morning!

7) Style your hair when it's sopping wet, it prevents all that frizz.

8) Try getting a dry hair cut. This way, the curl is at its natural state and you'll know exactly how it looks dry.

9) Leave it alone! Constantly, twisting and twirling your hair causes breakage and more frizz of coarse.

10) Eat healthy and take a multi vitamin.

Waxing Safety 411

Waxing safety should be every clients' top priority when seeking out a waxing service at any facility.  Here is a quick guide to make sure that you are going to receive a a safe and clean service!

1) Be sure that you see your esthetician wash their hands or sanitize before coming anywhere near you-kind of a given, but don't be afraid to ask them if they washed their hands!  They post signs at doctors offices to do the same and you are about to get worked on-so speak up if you need to!

2) Are they wearing gloves?  Ideally, gloves should be worn 100% of the time, but in the very least- the aesthetician should be gloved when performing Bikini/Brazilian waxes, under arm waxing, or upper lip or nose waxing.  These areas are really susceptible to contracting germs and should be protected.

3) Are they using a new applicator every time they dip into the wax?  If not-THEY SHOULD BE!!!!!  It was a really common practice and way of thinking to use just one applicator stick for an entire service- but as new information and research has come out against this, it is an OUT OF DATE way of thinking!  DOUBLE DIPPING IS JUST WRONG- and against State Board regulation!  If your aesthetician is double dipping with the same applicator- ask them to stop, and if they don't-save yourself and find a new place to get your service done!  Let's not think about how many clients' germs could end up in the same pot of wax or how gross it would be- YIKES!

4) Your aesthetician should also go over some before and aftercare instructions with you on how to care for your freshly waxed skin.  There are a lot of common sense things that sometimes get overlooked and you want to make sure that you don't accidentally do something to cause a bad skin reaction.  9 times out of 10, if a client has an adverse reaction it is usually because they are using something that sensitizes their skin that they forgot to mention to their aesthetician or they are not following correct post treatment protocol.

To get the most out of your waxing experience, you should follow these steps:
1) Be clean-come freshly showered.
2) Be dry. Cleanliness is appreciated, but skip the lotion-less oily skin=better waxing results.
3) Your hair should be about 1/4" long-about 3 weeks worth of hair growth.
4) Dress comfortably-wear loose clothing day of to prevent chafing or irritation.
5)Users of Retin-A, Renova, Accutane, and corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone, prednisone, Kenalog, and Elocon should not be using waxing as their hair removal method. Anti-biotic use can also cause major skin sensitivity or lifting!
6) Avoid tanning beds 3-5 days prior to waxing service
7) Avoid peels or any other kind of exfoliating 3-5 days prior to waxing.
8)If you are sensitive, use Ibuprofen, motrin, or topical numbing cream 1/2 hour prior to service.

We are always on hand if you have any other questions!

Should I Thread or Wax My Brows??

Threading has sprung up all over the place and has left many wondering if its a better choice than waxing.  There have also been some scary threading mishaps that have scared people away from trying it out.  Hopefully this blog entry will help clarify some threading confusion!

Waxing works well for a lot of clients, but sometimes prescriptions, strong over the counter topicals, and naturally sensitive skin types are better off trying threading as a hair removal method.  It certainly beats tweezing one hair at a time!

Clients who are GOOD candidates for threading:
*Have experience lifting or burns from waxing in the past
*Use prescription medications for the treatment of acne including, but not limited to:
Retin-A; Renova; Accutane; any topical steroids; any topical or oral; anti-biotics.
*Clients who use anti-againg products (over the counter or prescription)
*Clients who tan frequently
*Clients sensitive to heat
*Have a tendency to break out frequently post waxing

If you personally find tweezing extremely uncomfortable, threading may not be for you.  Threading works by rapidly exctracting a row of hairs by the root each pass-so rapid fire tweezing!

CAUTION!
It is also really important to make sure whoever you go to has a good amount of experience.  YOU DON'T NEED A LICENSE TO THREAD!  Inexperience threaders have traumatized clients in the past by pinching their skin or creating gaps/bald spots in the brow shape.  They should also be sure that the client is participating by holding the skin of the lid taught to avoid any injuries. Make sure the set up also looks really clean.  Since there is no current regulation on who can thread, sanitation practices can greatly vary!

When performed correctly, threading gives a beautiful naturally shaped brow with minimal redness/irritation.  Some clients may even notice that it can last longer than waxing and it can be performed on any facial area!  Everyone's results vary depending on her hair or skin type, but definitely try it at least once and make up your own mind!

We require all of our staff member to be trained on the proper way to thread and we use fantastic antibacterial thread from India.  If  you ever have any questions about the service, feel free to ask!

What exactly is "Microdermabrasion" and is it right for my skin type??

Here is the 411 on Microdermabrasion!
Microdermabrasion is a chemical-free exfoliation of the skin.  The wand of the machine that is applied to the skin and does the exfoliating is usually a disposable tip that has an opening allowing crystals to flow out and get sucked back into the machine.  Sometimes the wand is made of different bristle heads that rotate and depending on the stiffness of the bristles, deeper or lesser exfoliation occurs, or the wand is a metal or diamond tip with different grits (like different sand paper textures) that allow for different levels of exfoliation.  Whatever the wand is made of, the key is, Microdermabrasion is CHEMICAL FREE!!  It serves as a great alternative to chemical peels and laser treatments for clients who wish to work on the following skin problems:

*Fine lines and wrinkles
*Sun-damaged skin
*Acne/Acne scars
*Excess Oil
*Blackheads/whiteheads
*Enlarged pores
*Superficial age spots
*Dull/grey looking skin

Microdermabrasion is a great alternative to aggressive treatments because it is a more gradual approach to results!  Most clients will see/feel great results after just 1 treatment, however, for optimal results your aesthetician may recommend a series that will include a designated number of treatments and the time intervals between each treatment to get you where you want to be!

It is really important to have an experienced technician do the treatment on you.  When done correctly, it is not uncommon to be slightly pink/flush like you just went for a run at the gym.  It is safe to wear mineral makeup following your treatment. To maximize our result, BEFORE your first treatment:

1) Do not go to a tanning bed two weeks prior to treatment and this practice should be discontinued due to the increased risk of skin cancer and signs of aging.
2) It is recommended that extended sun exposure be avoided, especially 10 days prior.
3) Delay the use of tretinoin, Retin-A, Renova, Differin, Tazorac, Avage, EpiDuo, Ziana, and high percentage of AHA and BHA products 5 days prior to treatment-consult your physician first before tmeporary discontinuing the use of any medications.
4) Stop using any over the counter scrubs, acne treatments, or wrinkle treatments-anything abrasive for at least 5 days before your appointment

If you have any of the following conditions, Microdermabrasion is NOT right for you:

Rosacea; immune deficiency diseases; viral lesions; Active acne (large bursting cysts); systemic lupus; erythematosis; eczema; Vascular lesions; dermatitis; heavily pigmented tattoos; Blood thinners; uncontrolled diabetes; skin cancer; Active herpes simplex; keloid scars

If you have any of the above conditions-consult your physician about alternative skin treatments.

To maximize your results AFTER your treatment:

1) Stay cool!  Heating internally can cause hyperpigmentation (brown spots).
2) Do not put the treated area directly into hot shower spray
3) Do not use a hot tub, sauna, or steam room.
4)Do not go swimming.
5) Do not participate in activities that would cause excessive perspiration.
6) Do not use any srubs or other harsh products on your skin.
7) Do not direct a hair dryer onto the treated area.
8) Do not apply ice or ice water to the treated area.

It is normal to be pink and sometimes even see a little bit of light flaking after a microdermabrasion treatment,  The best thing to use are the products recommended by your aesthetician!  Usually, very gently and hydrating products and a daily moisturizer with a high SPF and mineral makeup.

Everyone's skin is different and can handle different levels of intensity.  Communication with the person doing the treatment is key!  If the treatment feels too strong-speak up!  They can adjust the level to make it comfortable for you :)

Tips for a perfect sunless tan!

1. First off, the most common cause of a patchy, uneven tan is dry skin!

-The night before you apply a tan, or go for an airbrush tan it’s crucial to exfoliate your skin, get all those dead skin cells off! St. Tropez has a Body Polish that works great for this!

-Apply plenty of moisturizer all over your body after your shower to get your skin as silky as possible!

-Immediately before you apply self tanner, or come for an airbrush tan make sure you moisturize all the problem areas on your skin (wrists, hands, elbows, knees, ankles and feet)!

2. Keep the product off your palms!

-When applying self tanner at home, make sure that you are wearing latex gloves or using St. Tropez applicator mitt!

-After you apply the tanner all over your body, swipe the backs of your hands with self tanner mixed with your moisturizer.

3. Make sure you don’t miss a spot!

-When applying self tanner at home make sure you cover every spot. Don’t worry about going over the same area twice, but your tan could be patchy if you miss a spot.

-Rubbing in your tan is not needed, just a smoothing application is necessary and then the product takes over and will work its magic! Too much rubbing can also be a cause for an uneven tan.

4. After applying your tan.

-You will want to wear dark, loose fitting clothing and avoid anything tight fitting. Anything that is too tight and rubs up against the tan can make the results a bit patchy.

-Avoid washing your hands as long as possible during the development period (for a minimum of two hours), but if you can go the whole recommended development time (which will be indicated on the product) without getting your hands wet your results will be better.

5. Don’t let your tan fade too quick!

-Each product will last a different amount of time, but for those of you (I’m guessing that’s everyone) who would like your tan to last longer, try using St. Tropez Self Tan Intensifier every 2-3 days! This is one of my favorite products, it will give your tan an extra boost when you start to see it fading.

Gobare Aesthetic Studio is one of only two places that carry the St. Tropez line in central Massachusetts! This line is the best of the best; Miley Cyrus who is on the cover of Elle Magazine this month has a radiant glow from St. Tropez. This is the best line I have ever come across and I highly recommend coming in for an airbrush tan, or trying some of their at home products! You can call us at 508-799-8833 or book online with us at https://www.vagaro.com/Gobare

Lash Extension Craze! Are they right for you?

Alright, let's talk lashes-or more specifically lash extensions!  There is so much confusion out there about what lash extensions are, how they are applied and how long they last.  Let's set this all straight and see if they are right for you!

What are lash extensions and how are they applied?
Lash extensions are synthetic lashes that come in a variety of lengths and thicknesses that can be applied one by one 1-2mm away from the lid onto a single lash.  They should never touch your skin and should only be applied to one single eyelash.  The best extensions are applied with a medical grade adhesive that required training and certification of some sort in order to purchase the products necessary for application.  The most reputable brands are Xtreme Lashes and Novalash.
If lesser quality adhesive is used or poor techniques are implemented to apply the lashes, your natural lashes can undergo major trauma!  Eye infections, irritations, and loss of natural lash length and strength are totally put at risk.  Do your research before you let someone apply extensions.  I think it's silly that I have to say that, but with the number of poorly qualified technicians applying extensions these days, we have seen more and more mangled lashes and unhappy clients come through our door for help!  Just because there is a sign in the window of a salon advertising that they do eyelash extensions does not mean that they are qualified or certified!

How long do they last?
Okay - there are a lot of variables here.  On average, people shed 7-14 lashes per eye every week (you lose about 14-28 lashes total/week more or less depending on how quickly your hair cycle is naturally and what you put your lashes through).
They can shed more quickly if you:
  • Don't allow for the appropriate amount of drying time after application before exposing them to heat, steam, or water.  (YES, this includes those dreadful tanning beds!)
  • Wear excessive amounts of makeup
  • Pick at your lashes
  • Don't remove your makeup properly and thoroughly
  • Sleep on them
  • Use heavy creams, lotions, or serums around your eyes
  • Seasonal allergies can also cause the lashes to shed more quickly
  • Fighting off a cold or being sick
  • Hormonal change, change in any prescriptions, change in your daily diet.
  • Dr or dehydrating environments.
These are the major causes that can make the lashes shed more quickly than average, although there may be others.
Typically, the first initial set a client has applied is between 50-85 lashes/eye (100-170 lashes).  Most people naturally have between 50-95 lashes/eye, though some may have as many as 120/eye and as few as 40/eye.  If you were to have 50-85 lashes applied/eye, after 4-8 weeks depending on all of the shedding factors, you will have shed all of the extensions off, and new lashes would have grown in their place.  To maintain the lashes, clients must come in for "Fills" every 2-4 weeks depending on how quickly they shed, their habits, and how perfect the client wants them to look during any given week.

Are eyelash extensions right for you?
If your eyes are free of any signs of irritations/infections, if you DO NOT have allergies/sensitivities to acrylates or cyanoacrylate adhesives, and you are comfortable with lying down for 1-2 hours, you can certainly have extensions applied.  If you are able to refrain from the habits above that cause extensions to shed more quickly, you are probably a good candidate.

The better your natural lashes are, the better the extensions can enhance your lashes.  Lets be honest, if you have short, thin, frail, blonde eyelashes, you probably won't walk out with Kim Kardashian eyes after your appointment!  BUT, they will certainly be longer and thicker than you could ever achieve with mascara alone. Some stylist that are not properly trained will overload someone with extensions and adhesive just to get a dramatic effect, but they are doing their client a dis-service.  What typically happens is after repeatedly going too long and thick on a client, the natural lash will start to grow weak, thin and can damage the natural growth-sometimes permanently!  If you want to look like you are wearing a false strip every day- WEAR A FALSE STRIP!  Don't ruin your lashes with the wrong size extension!  Long term effects are not worth it!

When extensions are applied correctly, they can actually allow your natural lashes to grow more healthily than applying mascara every day.  They don't touch the follicle where the lash grows from or gunk it up with junk like mascara does.  Extensions also provide freedom from curling your lashes as your natural lash will take on the curve of the extension.

The best extensions that last the longest are usually 2mm longer than your natural lashes and never thicker than double your lash width.  That along with the need for precise application is why it is so important to have a certified lash stylist working on your eyes.

We offer a Tester Set of extensions that include 10 lashes applied/eye and a full consult to discuss what look you want to achieve and give you the opportunity to try them out before you apply a full set.  That way, if you want to adjust the length, thickness, or number of lashes you want to apply, you can do so after when booking a larger set.  You can also skip right to getting a larger set applied if you are ready and not concerned with any potential allergy or the specifics of lash design!

BOOK HERE for your TESTER SET or full set of extensions and start causing your own lash envy!

Mineral Magic!

Ever wonder what the big fuss is about Mineral Makeup? Well wonder no more! This blog will help you understand how wonderful and beneficial mineral makeup truly is.

Mineral makeup is a natural alternative to other types of makeup because it doesn’t have oil, talc, perfume, dyes, alcohol, chemicals or other comedogenic ingredients.

Minerals offer very good and buildable coverage that don't feel like you're wearing any makeup at all. It covers imperfections perfectly, yet it allows the skin to "breathe". Mineral makeup is ideal for all skin types, skin tones and women of all ages.  There are some tricks to applying it to drier more mature skin, so it can look fabulous, you just have to know the right way to apply it!

Mineral makeup is the only makeup that you can apply following a chemical peel, microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing treatment without risking of inflammation or allergic reaction. It was originally formulated for sensitive skin types with rosacea and acne so it is super gentle!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS:

  • provides excellent sun protection (It doesn’t break down like lotions so it last longer!)
  • 100% hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic
  • appropriate for all skin types, even for those with hypersensitive skin
  • clams and soothes irritated skin
  • water-resistant (when applied correctly!)
  • doesn’t support bacteria
  • improves the health of your skin
  • won’t crease or smear during the day
  • replenishes and protects your skin
  • 100% chemically-free
  • provides long-lasting and flawless coverage
  • calms and reduces redness in rosacea or acne prone skin
  • isn’t heavy or cakey
  • is dermatologist and plastic surgeon recommended
  • provides lightweight feel of the makeup
  • evens out skin tone
  • easy to apply
  • allows your skin to breathe
  • less likely to become contaminated
  • reduces the appearance of aging
  • ideal for all skin types, oily to dry
  • offers a natural, healthy look

I have to say, I’ve tried a few different mineral makeup brands such as Bare Minerals and Sheer Cove and in my opinion none of them can compare to BeingTRUE. The one problem I had with the other brands was the overall finish. The other brands made my skin look more mature and defined my fine lines, which is definitely not what I was looking for. I can honestly say with BeingTRUE I don’t have that problem. The coverage is great, buildable, and breathable. The great thing about BeingTRUE is it comes in different consistencies such as a liquid tinted moisturizer, pressed powder and loose powder. You can use them separate or combine the tinted moisturizer with either the pressed or loose powder for more of a full coverage finish. Come try BeingTRUE mineral makeup at Gobare Aesthetic Studio and receive a complimentary tutorial when you purchase your BeingTRUE Kit!

See you soon!
